Training comprises:
  1. The Yacht - All practical courses use our well maintained charter yachts coded to MCA requirements of safety certification (Cat 2 & Cat 3) and matched to suit your group size and to meet the guidelines of relevant training authority RYA etc.

RYA Day Skipper (Practical Course)

Suggested pre-course experience

  • 5 days practical experience
  • 100 sea miles with 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht

It is assumed that you have knowledge of basic navigation and sailing competence. It's recommended that you attend a ‘Day Skipper' shore-based course prior to attending this course.

This 5 day course puts you in charge of your own yacht and crew. This qualification is generally recognised as the bench mark qualification for bare boat chartering. By the end of this course you should be competent in:

  • Pilotage
  • Boat handling - power & sail
  • Seamanship
  • Navigation
  • General yacht management

This course uses continuous assessment - i.e. no final exam. Certificates being issued when students have satisfied your instructors required levels of competence. 

 

RYA Coastal Skipper (Practical Course)

Suggested pre course experience:

  • 15 days, 2 days as skipper,
  • 300 miles, 8 night hours.

The assumed knowledge is boat handling to the standard of Day Skipper practical Sail cruising course, and navigation to the standard of Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shorebased.

This is an advanced five-day skippering course for those wishing to undertake coastal passages by day and night. Students will skipper challenging passages learning about prolonged and advanced passage planning. By the end of this course you should be competent in:

  • Pilotage by day and night
  • Advanced boat handling
  • Offshore safety and emergency situations

Run over five consecutive days a course completion certificate is issued and we can optionally arrange for an independently assessed Coastal Skipper Exam if required.

 

Yachtmaster Exam Preparation (Practical Course)

There is no ‘official' Yachtmaster practical course. Candidates wishing to undertake the Yachtmaster exam are strongly advised to have some tuition before the exam, even if they have worked their way through the other RYA Courses.

We can arrange pre Yachtmaster Exam tuition to suit individual needs & help arrange for examination to follow.

 
 

Yacht Manoeuvring Course

This is a practical course and is based at Port Hamble Marina on a new Beneteau Oceanis 37 and is designed to build your confidence whilst in the close confines of the marina. 
The course is open to all levels, from novice to advanced sailors that want to broaden their practical experience and knowledge of manoeuvring within marinas.

Courses run from December to March on the Saturday or Sunday of the second weekend of the month.

Course duration from 0800 hrs to 1700 hrs

Course covers:-

  • Theory effects of tide and wind.
  • Berthing bows to, alongside.
  • Berthing stern to, alongside.
  • Alongside, springing off Fore and aft.
  • Prop walk and prop wash.
  • Close quarter manoeuvring.
  • Short handed berthing alongside.

£99.00 inc VAT per person (based on 4 individuals sharing and subject to availability)

 

RYA Start Yachting

This course provides a short introduction to the delights of yacht sailing for novices. By the end of the course you will have a basic knowledge of sailing:

  • Steering a yacht
  • Sail handling
  • Rope-work
  • Be aware of safety on board

This course reduces the time requires to complete the Competent Crew Course. The duration of the course is two days with a certificate issued upon completion.

 

RYA Competent Crew (Practical Course)

This course is for beginners and those seeking to become recognised active crew members.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Steering a yacht
  • Sail handling
  • Rope-work
  • Be aware of safety on board
  • Keep a lookout
  • Row a dinghy
  • Assist in all the day to day routines on board

The minimum duration for this certificate 5 days and may optionally be run over 3 weekends or a combination of 3 days plus a weekend. (n.b. If you've completed a Start Yachting Course this can be completed in 3 or 4 days)

Some night sailing may be undertaken and certificate should be issued upon completion.

 

Coastal & Yachtmaster Examinations
